Canggu is one of my favourite destinations in Bali.
It’s a good place for Surfing, from begginers to advancecd. Canguu as a large expat community making it super popular with travellers but really with that brings lots of local cool places to hang out, get food and meet people!
We rented a scooter for our few days there as it’s just saved a lot of walking back and forth in the hot sun. This is the most convenient and cheapest way to get around. You can rent a motorbike for around 50,000 IDR ($3.50) per day. Chat to your accomodation about sorting you out with one for when you get there.
However, if you’ve never ridden on a motorbike before this is NOT the place to learn. Traffic is crazy, the roads are narrow, and the road rules are much different than in Western countries. I recommend taking Grab or GoJek motorbike taxis.
Times Warung – Cafe, Sunset cocktails
Times is a cute little cafe on the beach. They have super yummy food from breakfast through to dinner and is a fab spot for sunset for cocktails.
Smaller, more chill than the larger beach clubs. More of a locals spot… for now.
The Shady Shack – Cafe
My absolute favourite place for breakfast on the island. This little garden cafe is cosy, healthy, welcoming and the food is sooo delicious! I would go days in a row to have breakfast, read and relax before setting off into the day.
Crate – Cafe
Really great ‘Melbourne’ style cafe, it’s a small hole in the wall and lots of expats eat here. Best iced coffee ever its like an icy frappe and so bloody delicious. We had the ‘Pea Please’ Breaky and it was super tasty.
Mason – Fancy dinner
Go on treat yourself. Try the bbq prawns.
Warung Bu Mi – Indonesian food
Haven’t actually been to this place but 3 different locals recommended heading there for Indonesian food. Looks like a cheap local for nasi campour. But my fave will always be Warung Varuna!
Pali – Indonesian food
We went here for dinner and its in a traditional joglo. I recommend it if you want to dip your toe into some local food but still want a nice setting. The food is yummy but a little more expensive than a local warung.
Old Mans – Bar. Is currently under construction and looks like it’ll be twice the size?
This is your local surfer hangout, good food a mix of indo/western. The Snapper was so good. Its right next to the beach and is a super chill hang for an ice-cold Bintang. They have good Sunday session here and is best Wednesday and Sunday nights for live music. Just up from old mans 100m is the local store which has the only ATM in town. Jl Batu Balong (Main Street)
Warung Varuna – Indonesian food
We went here for the Nasi Campour (Indo for rice with sides). You get a plate (go for the yellow rice) and then choose from a range of salads, corn fritters, chicken, tofu, mi goring, veggies.. Super cheap! and so yummy! Don’t worry about the chicken none of it made us sick..Jl Batu Balong (Main Street).
BAKED – Cafe & Bakery
Baked was awesome for brekkie or a little stop for a croissant or yummy pastry before a day out exploring or on the beach. Really good coffee too! It’s in Pererenan, right next to Canggu.
Maukami – Indonesian food & Farm to table
A small farm to table project looking to work with local villagers and empower the locals. a beautiful little spot with insane delicious local food right next to their garden. This was beyond one of the best experiences we had while in canggu and shouldn’t be missed!
Lacalita – Mexican
This is a yummy Mexican place, they have a sister restaurant down in Seminyak. On Sundays they do 2 for 1 Bloody Mary and Bloody Marias and Mondays 2 for 1 Margs and Mohitos. 100% recommend the Bloody Maria.
Spring Spa – Day Spa for Massage & Facials
My Fave place in this area to really treat yourself. If you want a different vibe than the cheaper more local massage places check this place out. But also book ahead to make sure they can fit you in.
Tonic – Day spa
This place has a palm springs vibe and is worth checking out at some stage too.
Revive + Pilates – Pilates
If you want to do a spot of exercise on your trip I recommend this place for a reformer class. Be sure to book ahead.
BWork – Coworking space
Super duper fast internet and def a great spot for working remotely.
Colours – Nail salon
If you’re looking to get your tips and toes done, I’d say give this place a go. Loads of colour options!
